SAIV – WOOD PRODUCTION AND ESSENCES

BEECH

Beech is the most widespread species in Italian woods with an overall area of over one million hectares in high forest and coppice.

In Italy, the genus is represented by the only species Fagus sylvatica L. that is present in the Alps and Apennines, where it forms pure or mixed (beech) woods, over 500 m in the Alps and over 900 m in the Apennines.

Locally, when the climatic conditions allow it, beech trees can be found at lower levels. In the Gargano valley (in the south eastern part of Italy), in the woods of the Regione Umbria (precisely in the municipality of Ischitella there are depressed beech woods at 300 meters above sea level. at even lower is the endangered abyssal beechwood of the Carfalo valley near Montaione (Tuscany), with trees below 200 m.

The beech leaf was in the logo of the XVI Winter Olympic Games in Albertville.

ASH

The species of this group generally have a rapid growth and manage to survive in difficult environments such as polluted areas, with saltiness or strong winds, even resisting at low or high temperatures. In general, they grow in the temperate and subtropical regions of the northern hemisphere, but also in tropical areas such as Mexico, Cuba, Java and the Philippines.

The most common species in Italy are Fraxinus excelsior, Fraxinus ornus, used for the production of manna and commonly also called Manna ash or Manna tree; Fraxinus angustifolia known as the Southern Ash (Fraxinus oxycarpa Bieb. in the Flora d’Italia).

All three spontaneous species of Italian flora live in the Alps.

OAK

The Quercus petraea (oak) is a large deciduous species, with a regular and very thick crown, which is common in Italy (except in Sardinia). The Quercus pubescens (downy oak), is the most widespread species in Italy, so much so that it is simply called oak in many places.

A very rustic species, it prefers areas protected against the cold in the northern areas. It is a medium-sized deciduous oak, which grows slowly; it generally lives 200-300 years, and is typical of central-western Europe. Some oaks can be even older: the downy oak that grows in Tricarico (MT-Italy), is estimated to be 614 years.
Its trunk is 6.43 m in circumference and its height reaches 20 m. it is included in the list of natural monuments (original trees) of the Basilicata Region.

The finest timbers of this type are generally called “oak” with no distinction among the botanical species.
